PASTORAL, SOCIAL AND WELFARE NEEDS OF PUPILS
Each class teacher is responsible for the welfare of the children within the classroom. During the whole of playtime a teacher and a teaching assistant is on duty and any injuries are treated by another member of staff. There is a member of the teaching staff in school during lunchtime to deal with emergencies, otherwise children are cared for by two mid-day supervisors.
Appointments can be easily and quickly arranged for parents wishing to discuss their child’s social/welfare problems, by contacting the Headteacher, who will provide every assistance in dealing with the problem.
At the end of the summer term before children enter our Reception class they are invitied to spend the morning in the classroom meeting their new teacher and teaching assistant and enjoying some activities. A new parents meeting is also held around the same time when they are given information and guidance about school routines and procedures. It is also an opportunity for them to ask any quesitons and meet the staff.
All parents are asked to sign several 'permission' slips including
Internet access (always under adult supervision), Photographs in the local press (Child Protection) and Short Visit Consent form, this covers walking to St Peter's Church, the local library and around Walsden village.
Induction Procedure:
At the begining of the autum term the Reception class teacher and teaching assistant do 'home visits'. These give them the opportunity to observe the child in his/her home environment, carry out simple assessments, and for the parents to discuss any personal or private issues with the classteacher. This procedure is very much appreciated by all involved.
The children have a gentle, gradual introduction into school, attending half days for a week and then full days in the second week.
Minor accidents or illness in class are dealt with by the Class teacher. All staff are First Aid trained. When there is any concern parents are always contacted. It is therefore important that we have an emergency contact number for each child.
When a child is prescribed medicine it is usually better to keep him/her off school until the treatment is complete. The Headteacher will administer medicines with written permission from parents.
Asthma - The treatment of asthma is considered on-going medication. All children who require inhalers must have a spare to be kept in school, with written instructions as to the child’s Asthma Care Plan.
Any child with a Nut Allergy MUST have a labelled and up to date Epipen in school at all times.
If parents have any anxiety concerning their child’s health and safety in school, they should contact the Headteacher, who will be happy to talk through any concerns.
Sex Education:
There is no defined syllabus, children's questions are answered simply as they arise. Staff are mindful of the need to respond appropriately as in a caring family. We are aware of the age of our pupils. A Sex Education Policy is now in place. There is a parental right to withdraw their child from these lessons.
Transport and Access to School:
No special transport arrangements are applicable.
Please note that it is ILLEGAL to stop on the yellow 'zig-zag' lines on the road.
