Until December 2003 Walsden C of E (VC) Infant School was situated next to St Peter's Church in the centre of the village of Walsden.
The building was typically Victorian with 3 classrooms and a large hall. Outside was a playground and a large enclosed field.
Unfortunately, following a structural survey, it was discovered that the building had some very serious problems and consequently it was declared unsafe and the building was immediately closed.
This came as a huge shock to school, parents and the whole community and there were some serious concerns about the future of our school.
However, after much consultation, (and many differences of opinion) it was decided that we would be housed in two rooms at Ferney Lee Primary School 2 miles away, whilst modular units were erected on the site of Walsden Junior School.
This was a very difficult, stressful time for all concerned. The children had to travel by coach morning and afternoon, for the whole of the winter term. Equipment had to be organised and transported to Ferney Lee. Rooms had to be adapted, with two classes having to work in one room. Thanks to the helpfulness of Ferney Lee School staff and pupils, the kind co-operation of Walsden Junior School staff and the hard work of all Walsden Infant School staff, the support of the LEA officers and the patience and understanding of parents and the amazing adaptability of the children the whole experience turned out to be quite a positive one.
By Easter 2004 our new 'temporary' units were complete and we packed up yet again for our second move in three months.
Again everyone worked extremely hard to ensure that everything was ready for the children to begin the summer term in their lovely new environment.
The building was officially opened by Sam Aston (Chesney in 'Coronation Street') on Thursday, 20 May. A balloon release took place and parents, friends and members of the community joined us in a celebratory 'Open Day'.
Throughout the upheaval the main objective for the school staff was to ensure the children's education was not disrupted and that year's SATs results more than confirmed the achievement of that objective.
The accommodation has proved to be extremely comfortable and an excellent environment for our young pupils.
